Mturk, picking up pennies, and other things
Last night I was walking to the store to buy some beer. In the parking lot on my way there I came across a quarter. Between the time the I saw the glint of it laying there and my picking it up, looking at it, and putting it my pocket was neglible, a moment. Instantly, I thought about what my hourly would be for that. ...and that's a lot.
I'm not an affiliate marketer nor base even one cent on some kind MLM income, yet I make more than $100/day. I don't have anything against the people that do the former as long as they aren't like the people from the latter. More power to them and I hope their lambos drive fast. I am also not going to include how much I make in investing (despite that being the real way that I generate an income and will likely mention it).
"Beer money" can be real money. I'm not talking about gaming the system either. I try everything and measure against its learning curve, how much I believe I could make if I understand it, and the time it could take away from something else. Sometimes too there are other factors like immediate or next day payout; that can justify working for less. Perhaps I am waiting for another survey or batch off Mturk or clickworker or half a dozen other sites while doing shitwork transcribing on another site and then boom a user test from Usertesting or Validately or whatever shows up and I jump on it. Oh well, I timed out a $0.30 HIT but made $10 in the same frame.
I didn't work today yet over $80 poured into my account. I'm not going to a beach vacation with that but also it didn't take bullshitting anyone to get it. (It's kind of a lie in that I did a few continuing surveys but the money that came in wasn't part of it.) That is part of it though... being active. I have probably 50+ emails per day related toward the possibility of making money and while most of them are shit, some aren't or at least are applicable to me ("Hey, are you an overweight dude in Cleveland, Ohio that loves Taco Bell?! $200 study") I will spend my down time filling out those utterly specific qualifiers with reckless abandon because I've gotten hooked up with focus groups that has made far more money than any groan I get by not being accepted.
I could transcribe data at what would be around slightly better than minimum wage. I could simply use Mturk at the same. I could try to rely on the various usertesting sites that pay very well but are sparse in their offerings.
I do them all. I make enough to invest every day (and that is the other part of the game I play.)
