USA without SSN

Anyone in a similar position to me?

I'm a legal immigrant living in the USA but during my visa application process I am unable to work.

During this time, I'm trying to do what I can to earn money, but many places require an SSN to verify identity, which I cannot do. Places that don't require SSN for identity often won't accept a Paypal that isn't verified so I can't withdraw money to a non-verified Paypal. I can often link my Paypal account from the UK but then I get charged for currency conversion.

I wanted to know if anyone had any tips? At this point I'm considering just registering everything in my Wifes name, but its troublesome having to register her paypal when I do not have access to her email address.
