US paid sperm bank donation deep-dive (Sep 2026)
Everyone knows the sitcom version: walk in, fill a cup, walk out cash in hand. Real life has several meaningful gates that knock out the vast majority of candidates. I did a ton of research on all the banks across the US to put together a comparison.
Gate 1 — Geography. There are ~53 paid collection sites across 20 states: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, MA, MN, NC, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, TN, TX, VA, WA. A typical commitment is 1–3× a week for several months, so if there isn't one near you, it likely isn't viable.
Gate 2 — Pay. ~$35–$200 per approved sample; advertised ceilings run $720–$2,400/mo. But "up to" assumes perfect attendance and every sample passing QC, and roughly half your pay sits in FDA quarantine escrow for ~6 months before you see it.
Gate 3 — Eligibility. The "<1% accepted" figure banks love to quote is primarily marketing to prospective parents. The actual stats are rarely published but reasonable to assume screening is tough. One of the hard requirements is often whether your sample survives being frozen and thawed. On paper: 18–39, legal US work status, often a height minimum and an education floor. Anonymous banks exclude gay/msm donors (current FDA rule, separate from the 2023 blood-donation change).
Gate 4 — Commitment. Weeks of unpaid screening up front, then 6–12 months of visits 2–3× a week, 2–3 days abstinence before each, with retesting gating the deferred half of your pay.

Other notes if you are considering it seriously:
- There's a second method for paid sperm donation via known donor agencies that I didn't cover. It's a different beast (matched to a specific family, not anonymous) and pay scale ($5,000 to $100,000 per cycle) instead of a monthly wage. If folks are interested, I can do a follow-on.
- It's 1099 income (banks issue a 1099 over $600/yr)
- "anonymous" is mostly dead — most banks are identity-release now, and DNA kits + kids requesting identity at 18 mean it isn't really a thing anymore.
