Upwork help needed

Idk if this is the right sub reddit for this but I just dont understand how upwork clients hire people, Im always in the search for entry level positions to earn extra cash as I am a student, but even with countless of jobs posted every hour related to entry level jobs, they still want experience and after applying for countless of jobs, many clients dont even look at your proposals, can anyone pls guide me on how upwork works and what type of clients should i be targeting
