These websites that pay you to write content for them, do they give you the topics to write about, or is it a platform for you to make your own content and the website benefits from it receiving traffic?

Some of the top posts on this sub mention writing blogs or similar such content and getting paid for it, either per word or for writing a certain length piece, or similar.

What's the set-up of that kind of work like? Are you told what to write about, given something to work with? Bullet points even, for you to flesh out into flowing text?

Or is it just a space for you to write anything and if you're regular enough/attract traffic (through SEO optimisation I assume? or just catchy headlines and interesting body?) then you're allowed to keep writing.
