About the recent giveaways/promotions on this subreddit + transparency report + survey
Hey there, I'm writing a heavily detailed post about recent events lately on this subreddit involving giveaways. I'd encourage reading the whole thing if you're concerned or interested about how Giveaways on this subreddit have worked up through this point, or how you can help shape how they work in the future.
Giveaways & Transparency Report
If you're a frequent viewer of the subreddit, you've probably noticed an uptick in the quantity of giveaways on this subreddit lately. In the past this sub would see $25 and $50 giveaways with the occasional $100, and lately it's seemed like a constant flow of $100s, $250s, and the occasional $500.
This recent influx in "sponsored" posts is mostly thanks to the hard work of the mods of the sub (and I guess I'll give myself some credit too), but also to the realization by many sites what the value this subreddit's nearly 2 million monthly views could have to offer. To clarify, I'm not a moderator of this subreddit, but I have been heavily involved with the giveaways that happen on this subreddit, so that's why I am making this post.
With this, there's been some bad actors taking shape. For example, we've seen an entire giveaway become a scam recently because the sponsoring site refunded the prizes for the giveaway and left the sub as if nothing happened. (Big shoutout to /u/grindabuckofficial (https://www.grindabuck.com) for paying out the prizes to the winners, since the actual sponsor of the giveaway ended up jumping ship).
Lately many small, new GPT sites have put in requests to host giveaways on this subreddit, and there's been no choice but to decline their requests. Think about it: Someone could make a copypasta GPT site, launch a giveaway, host a two week giveaway, gain (quite literally) thousands of users in that timeframe, and then back out and laugh all the way to the bank with all that they made from users on their site during that timeframe, with no intention of paying the winners of the giveaway, nor the users who earn on their site. The whole time, since the giveaway is stickied at the top of the subreddit, it looks like the subreddit is endorsing the site, which is never the case.
The issue grows even more with a recent issue with the generous ongoing $500 FluidStack giveaway, (which you can still enter, by the way) when a competitor of FluidStack was denied the ability to host a giveaway because the site in question failed to pass a verification process by the mods (aka: there was no proof the site wasn't a scam). In turn they argued with the mods and I about it, and resulted in them making a defamation post about FluidStack, citing unverifiable claims (that actually have been proven false) about FluidStack.
This makes the process even more complicated. The mods have discussed recently the entire removal of giveaways from the subreddit because of this behavior. In no case are giveaways a way to suppress a site's competition. Reddit is an open forum. If you have something to post about that's in line with the subreddit's rules, make a post about it. Instead of pissing on other sites that are generously hosting giveaways for the community, try to build yourself up in the community. Comment on some posts, start a discussion about whatever it is you'd like to talk about (beermoney related), and grow that way.
If you're someone reading this who has an app or a site that you want to promote in the form of a giveaway, there's an entire wiki page on it here with more information. All giveaways on this subreddit are for the full gain of the community -- the mods nor myself gain anything from giveaways. If that's not your cup of tea, you can always pay a lot of money to reddit and set up some reddit ads where the money goes entirely to reddit :).
I've been the one managing/setting up many of the recent & upcoming giveaways/promotions. If you're interested in hosting something, feel free to send me a PM, or message the modmail.
Survey
Having said all of the above, we're currently looking for ways to improve the giveaway experience both for users, as well as the sponsors of the giveaways.
While all of the recent giveaways have been a simple and traditional giveaway where there's just a grand prize split, and all you have to do is enter before the deadline for a chance to win, I'm more interested in seeing what the reaction would be to different types of promotions.
For example, what if instead of the traditional giveaway, a site offered a special bonus just for beermoney users. Like maybe a site gives all new users a bonus $5 for signing up (like maybe in addition to their standard $5 bonus (for a total of $10)). Or perhaps instead a sponsor could dabble around with a an instant win giveaway, instead... similar to this one back from April, for those who remember/participated in it.
According to my findings, thousands of users have participated in giveaways on this subreddit, and interestingly out of the last 7 giveaways (not including the ongoing giveaway) on this subreddit, only 4 users have participated in all of them, which is very impressive. They are:
Later today I will be sending out a PM from my /u/Fishering_BOT to everyone who has entered at least 5 out of the last 7 giveaways (34 people) with a link to a survey to try and understand how people generally interact with giveaways. Everyone who completes this survey will get $3 as a thank you. It's not much but I'm self-funding this, soooo...
If not enough people participate I'll send out the survey to people who entered 4/7 at a later point.
Hopefully this survey will help make giveaways on this subreddit a better experience in the future. If you're expecting to receive this survey and you're interested in participating, the survey will be sent out later today, so keep your eyes out for a PM. Most people reading this won't be receiving this survey, but if you have any feedback on how the giveaways on this subreddit have been run thus far or have ideas for how they can improve, please feel free to leave a comment or send me a PM.
