Help with Amazon shopper panel

I have a question for those of you that use the Amazon Shoppers Panel app. I downloaded the app yesterday and signed up for the wait list. It had me active the the "always on" amazon vpn settings for ads. Yet every time I close out the app I get a notification that the vpn has been disconnected. Am I missing something? Do you have to leave the app open all the time or is this something that only works after you are accepted from the wait list?
