Shiftsmart taxes? (Asking current workers)

I've been looking into Shiftsmart to earn extra money on my own time, but I saw in the orientation video that we are technically 1099 independent employees. For anyone who has worked for the company, can you tell me more about how it is taxed? I'm trying to determine whether it is worth the extra hassle during tax season to do shifts on it. Thanks!
