Conversationally to "Temporarily Pause" their research program on April 30.
Conversationally sent out an email today announcing that as of May 1, they will no longer be paying out or collection voice assistant data from users.
Here's the whole email announcement from Conversationally:
Thank you so much for being part of our Conversationally community, and for helping us make voice assistants better for everybody. We are sensitive to the current situation everybody is dealing with, and first and foremost we hope you’re staying safe and healthy.
Like so many organizations, our research sponsors have temporarily reprioritized what they’re focusing on, with the goal of returning to longer term projects as soon as possible. As part of this, we will be pausing the Conversationally program starting May 1, 2020. This was a hard decision for us to make, as we’ve appreciated you all being part of this project, and we value the contribution you make to our research. We’re hoping to restart the program soon, we’ll let you know when we do, and we look forward to you rejoining us.
What this pause means for you is:
- We will stop collecting your voice assistant usage information on or before 11:59 PM Pacific on Thursday, April 30th.
- If you meet the standard qualifications for payment in April, you will receive your payment on May 15th.
- Your Conversationally account will be paused, and when the program resumes you’ll be notified.
We are sad we won't be hearing from you for a while. We are so thankful you have been part of the Conversationally community, and we look forward to reconnecting sometime soon.
Sincerely,
The Conversationally Team
Key Takeaways
- This pause is intended to be temporary. They hope to resume research at some point.
- If you met the required voice activity goals for April, you'll get paid on May 15.
- They'll send an email once they resume the program.
I personally saw this one coming. Many longform research is probably seeing budget cuts, and I think that this as well as many other apps listed on the Set & Forget thread will be affected in the near future as well.
Whenever something shuts down with the intention of reopening, I always like to comment with my opinions of whether or not it will actually open back up. Think about how often things close announcing that it's just temporary... PlayVIG, NADA Mobile (clearly was an exit scam), Expense Rewards, etc...
With that regard, I think it's hard to tell if they'll actually start up again. I could imagine that if they were to receive funding to continue, it would likely be more into the far distant future. Just my guess. On that same token, I think it's important to mention another somewhat related app, HyperDrive. They closed a couple months back, and it seemed clear that they were intending on reopening out of their "trial" phase. It is very likely that this reintroduction of their rewards app will be even more distant now, if it will ever happen at all.
