Indeed Job Spotter - No Longer Worth the Time/Effort? Algorithm and Rewards Seem to Have Changed
When this app was first launched it was great, and the rewards were more or less fair: 110 points for a small business few had captured, 30 for a chain business. However, in the last months I think that they have completely changed the algorithm and rewards system. I recently submitted three signs, all for small businesses, which had been submitted 50, 8 and 4 times respectively; all received 5 points, equivalent to 5 cents. I contacted them a number of times about the algorithm and they sent me stock responses about smaller businesses receiving more points, then insisted that everything was working fine. But, if that were the case, the three instances above would have received different amounts, and would not have been so low. Now, I see that in the relaunched version of the app only one person can get points for a sign per day, and they want you to check a map of submitted signs before doing so. What a waste of time and data! They have also removed the verify feature, as others have commented.
My main problem here is that this could be an hourly wage job for someone, but they want to maximise listings by paying people only for a submitted sign, and not for time outside of that; they want to crowd-source, but now that the numbers of people using the app are too many, they don’t even want to pay for that. It’s really exploitative: if you are thinking of using it, I would carefully add up how much time and money you are spending to submit these signs and whether it amounts to a $15/hr minimum wage. I'm based out of Toronto. so it could be different elsewhere, but wanted to flag this for other regular jobspotters, or people who are thinking of signing up.
