Providing date of birth

I am brand new to the online beer money world. I have signed up on two sites so far and they both asked for my date of birth, which I hate giving out. Why do they ask for it? Do you give them your actual DOB or a fake one? I don't see why they need it and why giving them a fake one would make a difference.
