I don't understand how Appen works

I've been trying to find work or even just gig jobs on Appen for a while now and I have no idea how it is supposed to work. I keep applying to the projects but they stay pending for weeks. I was accepted into two, but one was just a weekly survey and the other kept pushing back the start time week after week until it eventually just went away. I don't think it ever actually started. I see people talk about working with Appen as actual jobs but I don't see how. Am I doing something wrong? Any advice?
