Prolific - a website to keep open, or are the emails reliable?

I just started with Prolific. I know some sites say they'll email you about studies, but it's actually better to keep open in the background (like Usertesting.) But I've also experienced some websites that have reliable emails, like Epoll and UserCrowd.

In your experience, is it better to keep Prolific open in the background? If so, does it ding/pop up with a little icon that there's something new? Or should I just wait for the emails?
