Anyone ever do freelance writing?

Just looking for some way to share my loves of racing and writing, and see that a lot of the magazines in that area (drivetribe, etc.), and see that a lot are looking for freelance writers with pay for one-off or short term, side gig level writing jobs. Main thing I want to know is if the money is worth the time.
