Miles App SCAM: Variably priced rewards that NOBODY can afford
I deleted Miles Rewards long ago when I realized that all of the "rewards" on their app that you cold redeem for were generic, publicly offered discounts on brands you've never probably heard of before.
If you're not familiar of what Miles is, don't familiarize yourself.
If you're familiar of what Miles is, de-familiarize yourself and delete this junk.
If you currently have Miles installed, hopefully this reddit thread will convince you to finally hit that uninstall button, because this is going to be a clusterfuck of twitter storytelling.
The Miles Amazon GC Scandal
The date is Thursday, January 16. Miles sends out an email to all of its users. Good news! Miles is offering up amazon gift cards as a redemption option tomorrow! Okay, cool, we'll see you then! Finally something worth redeeming...
So the next day, January 17th, Miles tweets! The gift card option is now available! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
But wait.
Something's wrong.
Instead of people liking the tweet and replying with the pure joy of something value, there's nothing. Nothing but ???s.
People quickly began to realize... something ain't right. The tweet gets a ton of replies from people sending screenshots showing different offers. Some people see a $5 amazon gift card. Some might see $10... Others show even $50. But here's the catch:
The price is different for everyone.
People start to realize what's going on here. Nobody can afford the Amazon gift cards. Your balance doesn't matter, and the only way to reach the cash out is to refer users.
This guy totally nailed it on the head.
What's great here is that Miles responds to the backlash in this golden tweet, saying that the cost of redeeming the amazon gift card is different for everyone for "various factors". What's crazy to me is that one of these factors even states, "current miles balance". So what the hell even is the point of using your app and earning miles if it doesn't matter when cashing out?
Conclusion
Live I've said, Miles is basically the closest thing to a scam without technically being able to be called a scam. They have raised plenty of money and they're at a point where they're receiving data from hundreds of thousands of (extremely foolish) users and they're paying almost nothing for all the location data they're collecting. In fact, I think there's an argument to be made that when you cash out your miles, they could even be making money off of that, too (since they're likely just referrals to new products/services anyways).
The only way to fight back is to vote with your decision to delete the app and by leaving a negative review. What's unfortunate is that several (again, foolish) users will see this and go and refer new users like breeding rabbits, so their shitty strategy may work after all.
