Translating for beermoney isn't good these days.

I wanted to rant about translating for beermoney. Compared to doing surveys, it isn't a popular method, but doing a quick search, it seems as enough people are doing it.

Most translation sites are not very active anymore. In the 2-years I've been doing online translation Flitto, translate.com, translated.com, and Unbabel haven't sent any work or emails. For about a year there was Mars Translation, but it got bought out by a Chinese firm called "CCJK". Since then, there hasn't been any work.

The only site that is still active in my experience(that deals exclusively with translation) is Gengo. Gengo's tests for popular languages are seldom open. I've never seen the tests for Spanish or French open. The uncommon languages never have work available. Once you do get into a common language and finish a well-paid job, they'll ban you from Gengo and withhold your paycheque. You can just create another account, they aren't going to verify your identity, but that language-pair won't be open again for a while. When Gengo bans your account, there will be no warning, just a random email saying your account has been terminated. They'll say you took too long to finish a job or something, but in reality, it's because they didn't want to pay you, or they had too many translators in your language pair. Even if you had 8+/10 for a quality-score. That $2000 would have gone far that month...

At least Gengo pays okay rates and you get paid at all. I've heard they reject tests for no reason sometimes, or that the tests are unfair, I can see that 100%.

Moving on, but compared to Gengo, there isn't much you can do translation-wise. You can go on Freelancer, Upwork, Fiverr, but the rates! They're nothing! Clients want one cent(USD) for 1 word. They even want bulk-rates. For the amount of time it takes, it just isn't worth it. Even if you cheapen yourself to Indian rates, Indian people will berate you and dehumanize you. It just makes it so unworth it.

So what are other beermoney translators doing these days?
