Paypal asking me to upload documents?

I currently have money waiting for me from Prolific and I want to be able to keep it in my PayPal balance rather than transferring it to my card, but in order to do that it says that I have to upload my Photo ID and an image of my SSN card. Is this safe? I just get so paranoid about these things!
